As Darla was being swept away by the power of the big rock show Buzz was
struggling back stage with the security thugs, kicking and crying out he had
done nothing wrong. Buzz was no longer in control of his emotions or the
inevitability of his impending bruises, cuts, broken nose and hangover. Buzz
would return later, there would be more rock shows to attend and more
whiskey to drink, but the outcome of this present situation would before long
turn Buzz’s life around. But more of that later. Lets get back to Darla, who
by now had forgotten that Buzz even existed and that her clothes and purse
were in Buzz’s ’72 Monte Carlo, illegally parked some distance away at Al’s
Tire Shop.
The transition from being in the crowd with the rest of the vermin to being in
the dark steamy hollow that was the stage left guitar pit had been so fast and
complete that Darla was still in a state of shock and with the shock a terrible
fear; and in that fear, in her frenzy, she grabbed the guitar roadie around the
waist because he was the only one there. The guitar roadie, mistaking this
gesture for more than it really was, wrapped his arms around her and put his
tongue to her. Darla did not need this. Things were happening for Darla too
quickly. She had never had a big sopping tongue shoved down her mouth
before and she did not like it. Yet. She wriggled free of his deadly clutches.
The guitar roadie, a little shaken up himself, what with Buzz wiping out half
his guitars and throwing up on the carpet and trying to put the moves on a girl
he had hoped would be a nymphomaniac, had been neglecting his gig and now
he was being motioned on stage by the rock guitarist and when he went up for
his next guitar change, he didn’t have the right guitar. All of a sudden, the gig
was not going very well for the guitar roadie. But thinking quickly he soon
leapt back out with the right guitar and left Darla alone in the pit. Not
knowing what to do and being half crazed with fear and the excitement of
being backstage at a big rock show, Darla did what any good verm would do:
She stole the set list and a bag of picks, and with new confidence in her ability
to manipulate roadies, walked around the back of the stage where she would
soon encounter someone from the lighting crew and her life would change
forever.
